1983
While they visited the Gallop Cemetery, were these guinea hens...
looking for a home,
or "final nesting place",
or just roaming from a nearby farm?

Prior to the fence being placed around the Gallop Cemetery, all Chandler Township cattle had "free range" which meant they could roam wherever their owners would allow as long the property was not fenced. The cattle thus, unwittingly, were rather mischievous while trundling through the cemetery. Many tombstones were knocked over, and broken, like that of my Great Great Grandmother Mary Halfpenny Mackie as in the photo above. In 1983 Sheldon Buckmaster and a friend hauled our generator out to the cemetery so they could drill holes into the pieces of the tombstone to hold re-rod (reinforcing steel) to hold the pieces together in an upright position... then they used an adhesive from a funeral home director to bind the four pieces together. ~ Karla Howard Buckmaster

Mary Halfpenny Mackie's granddaughter Howardine Wood Bush Plumb wrote about the time when Mary was dying: "She died in Chandler Township in the Summer of 1891. She is buried with her husband John Mackie, daughter Marion Mackie Wood, and son-in-law Howard Wood in Chandler Cemetery [Gallop Cemetery]. The morning Mary got so ill her son Bill drove to Petoskey, 18 miles, so fast he foundered his horse. He drove with a top buggy so he could bring back the doctor. The doctor drove his own horses, and Bill's buggy, but they could not help her."
Mary Halfpenny Mackie's daughter Marion Mackie Wood wrote in her 9 June 1945 diary about the day her mother died: "The day my mother died in 1891-That was a hot and drowthy time. Quite different to how it looks this year-The hay was 18" high in the field and the boys had to mow a swath as wide as a road so the teams could drive up to the door. such hay! I can see it yet."
"Free ranging" of cattle in Chandler Township came to an end sometime in the 1970's. The State of Michigan decided that the cattle were not good for the land in the woods, as the cattle compacted the soil to an extent that the forest floor was not healthy. For a period of time, farmers like Gus Matz and Emil Harmon were able to pay to lease particular land from the State of Michigan to maintain their cattle's "free range" kind of grazing right. At some point, both of the Chandler Township cemeteries were fenced in which helped to protect their grave site properties from the "free range" cattle.
By 2 May 2010, Sheldon and I had purchased two Gallop Cemetery plots for ourselves to place our tombstone. Photo above shows Chandler Township Supervisor Dennis Howard helping Sheldon to locate our plot site. In the foreground is my GGGrandmother Mary Halfpenny Mackie's tombstone which Sheldon repaired in 1983; still standing strong and straight. ~ Karla Howard Buckmaster

Forest Leroy Ashman's remains were moved from East Chandler Hill Cemetery to Greenwood Cemetery Section H Block 40 Lot 18 in Petoskey, Michigan, where his wife Ada (West) Ashman Hanselman Swan also was buried in 1967. Forest Ashman's marriage to Adeline West 12 February 1901 recorded in the Emmet County Michigan vital records. Ada (West) Ashman's marriage to John A. Hauselman 29 July 1929 in the Emmet County Michigan vital records.
Gordon Ashman was born in 1889 in Charlevoix County, Springvale, Michigan, and died at 88 years old in 1978. His obituary above stated he was buried in Greenwood Cemetery in Petoskey, but Greenwood Cemetery has noted that burial in Greenwood Cemetery was not true as of 8 May 2007.

The connection between the Austin and Hubble tombstones is not obvious, but the parents of Anna Belle Austin were Earl Israel and Hazel Bell Hubbell Austin. Myrtle Hubble as stated on her Chandler Township Charlevoix County death certificate was the daughter of John [of Holland] and Nina Howe [of Holly MI] Closterman. Emery James Hubble of Vanderbilt MI was the Informant, and the husband of Myrtle Hubble, who passed away from Carcinoma of Stomach. H.A. Potts was the Registrar, and C.G. ~ Bertha Della Bush ~
Bertha Della Bush who died of Spinal Meningitis 27 May 1905 was buried in the Chandler Cemetery No. 2. Bertha was the sister of John Bush. John Bush was my mother Marion Bush Howard Starr's father, so Bertha would have been a great aunt to me. The informant Thomas Bush of Springvale MI and Bertha's mother Minnie Kidd of Kentucky were the parents of Bertha, John, and also siblings Jane who married Norman Wingo, Jasper who married Isabel Shepard, and Dewy "Dude" who married Clarabelle Fraley.
No undertaker was noted on the death certificate. No known gravesite nor grave marker exists in the Chandler Cemetery No. 2 for Bertha Della Bush. In early 2010 Chandler Township hired a company to x-ray the ground of the Gallop Cemetery to determine where unmarked graves might possibly be located. Chandler Township officials have copies of the map of the x-ray markings. Many many markings indicate that several unmarked graves exist in the Gallop Cemetery of which Bertha Della Bush's gravesite is probably shown as one of the markings.

(Sisters)
William and Sarah Odell Clark were the parents of Ethel Clark who died 2 June 1903 of "Acute Tuberculosis and contributory Whooping Cough" at only 12 years 9 months and 24 days old. She was buried in the Chandler Cemetery with O.M. Karslake of Vanderbilt Michigan being the Undertaker. Ethel's father William Clark of Springvale MI was the Reporter. Ethel Clark had been born 8 August 1891 in Branch County MI. Ethel's mother was Sarah Odell.
Bertha M. (Clark) Smith and Ethel Clark, of the same tombstone above, were sisters... Bertha was born 8 September 1889 and died 25 February 1911 (21 years, 5 months, 17 days). Bertha and Ethel also had sisters named Della and Marguerite, and brothers Will, Otis "Lynn", and Carl. Additional information about Carl Clark is listed with the Snyder Family on this same web page, because he married Mabel Snyder. Carl and Mabel lived on top of Chandler Hill a great deal of their lives. On Bertha's death certificate below, the mother's name is written as "Salauda Odell". |
~ Nathan W. Davis ~
Nathan W. Davis's Chandler Township Charlevoix County death certificate stated that Nathan W. Davis was buried in Chandler Cemetery No. 2 on 16 September 1912. No gravesite is found to be marked for him in 2013, a hundred years later. Nathan was the son of Silas and Hope [possibly?] Davis of Virginia. With Nathan being "widowed", Sam Davis of Boyne Falls MI was the Informant. Carl Clark was the Registrar of the death certificate, and E.G. Gibson of Vanderbilt was the Undertaker. Nathan had Chronic Brights Disease and passed away at about 92 years old on 13 September 1912.

~ Robert Leroy Davis ~
Robert Leroy Davis's Chandler Township Charlevoix County death certificate stated that Robert Leroy Davis was buried in Chandler Cemetery on 21 May 1906, after passing away at only 9 months old on 19 May 1906. No gravesite is found to be marked for him in 2013, over a hundred years later. Robert Leroy Davis was born in Chandler Township on 24 July 24 1905 and died from Endocarditis with complication of ? and Pertussis. He was the son of Samuel [born in Indiana] and Agnes Warner [born in Berry County Michigan] Davis. With Robert being so young, his mother Agnes M. Davis of Thumb Lake MI was the informant. William Clark was the Registrar of the death certificate, and J.M. Snyder of Springvale was the undertaker. Robert's father Samuel Davis was probably the same Sam Davis who was the Informant on the death certificate above for Nathan W. Davis.

~ Stillborn Dilts ~
The death certificate of the Stillborn Male child of John and Ida Brown Dilts of Chandler Township Charlevoix County stated that this "Stillborn" child was buried in Chandler Cemetery on 27 January 1914 one day after being born and passing away on 26 January 1914. No gravesite is found to be marked for him in 2013. Dr. Conkle of Boyne Falls MI was the Informant. William H. Clark of Chandler Township was the Registrar.

~ Frank Eastwood and Wife Rhoda Fetterly Eastwood ~
Two photos above: Frank Eastwood's Chandler Township Charlevoix County death certificate stated that Frank Eastwood was buried in the Township Cemetery of Chandler on 8 January 1903. Frank was the son of Alfred Eastwood of England. Frank's widow Rhoda was the Reporter. Carl Clark was the Registrar of the death certificate, and E.G. Gibson of Vanderbilt was the Undertaker. Frank had "Carcinoma of Stomach" for an indefinite period of time. Dr. McKillop of Wolverine signed the death certificate for Frank Eastwood who died 6 January 1903 as also stated on the tombstone above. The death certificate stated that Frank was 47 years 2 months, and 21 days old when he died which would have made his birthdate on 15 October 1856 which was also engraved on the tombstone above. Confusing, however, is the extra smaller tombstone for Frank beside that of his wife Rhoda Fetterly Eastwood whom Frank married 12 October 1880 in Chandler Township Charlevoix County. That smaller tombstone engraved Frank's birth year as 1847... perhaps that should have been for 47 years old??? The death certificate also told that Frank was the parent of 9 children with 7 still living in 1903. Frank and Rhoda's children were: Cora Belle (referred to as Cora Kettler in the 24 Apri 1895 The Petoskey Record), Carl, Earl "John", Nora, Birdy, Alva, Evelena "Lena" [see tombstone photo below for Lena Ledwick], Dalton, and Alfred.
Cora Belle Married Lewis Deneen in 1898.
Carl died at age two, possibly of cholera, and is buried in the Gallop Cemetery. 6 July 1884 ~ 14 September 1886
Earl (1887~1969)was first married to Eveline Mitchell/Green, and second married to Florence Padgett... Buried Boyne Falls Cemetery. Florence died 23 February 2017, and will also be buried in Spring 2017 in Boyne Valley Township Cemetery.
Nora married Allen Burgess.
Birdy died at three weeks of measles. 23 September 1891 ~ 16 October 1891 [Small stone beside Carl's]
Alva had terrible seizures.
Lena died in childbirth in 1926, and the baby girl was possibly put in the casket with Lena. Lena's funeral was held in the church across the road from the Gallop Cemetery.
Dalton (1899~1974) married Ellen Sage and they adopted a daughter Cleo. Dalton was buried in Boyne Valley Cemetery Boyne Falls MI.
Alfred was born in 1901-02 as noted on the tombstone above, and the father Alfred of these children, died in January 1903.
A 1903 letter from Nellie Mackie Pearson to her sister Marion Mackie Wood reiterated about the date Frank was buried, and also told about Frank having delivered mail in Chandler Township [see Postal Delivery webpage on this site for additional information from letter].

20 October 1858 ~ 22 May 1923
George Fetterly's first wife was Melissa Heasley. Melissa was a teacher in Chandler Township.
Does anyone know in which school Melissa Heasley Fetterly was a teacher?
The photo below right:
Melissa Heasley Fetterly was one of two of the exact same photos that Wendy Butka has in her possession.
One photo is labeled: "To Dalton [Eastwood] from your Teacher"
and the other photo is labeled: "To Alfred [Eastwood] from your Teacher"
So, the photo is probably from at least 1906 because Alfred was born about 1901.

~ George Fetterly and Second Wife Mary Ann Storey ~
George Fetterly's second wife was Mary Ann Storey who married Oliver Warner after she had been married to George. Mary Ann Warner (1866~1940) is not buried in this Gallop Cemetery, but rather is buried in the Silver Lake Cemetery Cheboygan County Wolverine MI.
~ Jane Forrester ~
According to her death certificate:
NAME: Jane Forrester
DOD: 18 July, 1902
LOCATION: Springvale, Chandler, Charlevoix, MI
PLACE OF BURIAL: Springvale Township, Charlevoix Co.
As was often the case with that area of death certificates, Jane's also was signed by McKillop of Wolverine, Michigan.
As noted above, Jane Forrester was to have been buried in the Chandler Cemetery, but no tombstone has been located for her.
The 1901 plat map for Chandler Township shows the township cemetery (now the Gallop Cemetery) as adjacent to the land of Jane's son Albert Harrington. The land next to him belonged to Jane's son-in-law Gus Gilbert married to Jane's daughter Ella Harrington. So, it would make sense that she was buried there. The Augustus "Gus" Gilbert Family is listed on both the 1900 and the 1910 Census records, AND, on the same page the Albert Harrington Family is listed. Albert Harrington was the enumerator for the 1900 Chandler Township Census. The 1902 Plat Book Patron Directory notes that A. Harrington as "Farming and Lumbering. Born 7 March 1858. Married 10 October 1877 to Emma Blough and had two children."
When Jane was married to Edmond Harrington, they had three children: Lavere, Albert, and Ella. Ella was born in January 1864 in Albion, Calhoun County, Michigan. She married Gus Gilbert in 1879 in DeWitt, Clinton County, Michigan, and they were in Chandler Township by 1896. They were in Eagle, Clinton County, Michigan, by 1920. Only one of Ella and Gus's seven children, Robert G. Gilbert was born in Chandler Township (1896).
Below is a photo of Jacob Augustus and Ella (Harrington) Gilbert in later years when no longer living in Chandler Township.

~ Gallop / Weber~
What a great example of what a difference just a bit of cemetery clean-up can make... In the photos above taken in May 2013, the tall Gallop marker for Elisha Gallop, who died "27 August 1895 aged 79 yrs 8 mos & 17 dys", was obvious. The other side of the stone is engraved for Elisha's daughter-in-law Mary Corbett "d. Sept 28, 1896 aged 35 yrs 7 mos 8 dys Wife of George Gallop". Sheldon and I had been doing some overall cleanup in the Gallop Cemetery at that time, and never realized then that another marker even existed within the two juniper bushes adjacent to the tall Gallop marker as seen in the photos above. On 25 July 2013, however, Sheldon and I were amazed when we entered the cemetery to discover that a wonderful marker had been revealed that had been hidden within the two juniper bushes for years [Two Photos Below]. Someone had been there to clean up the site for the Gallop marker for George and Constance Gallop, within the Gallop Cemetery. It would be a wonderful contribution to the entire cemetery site for others to stop by the cemetery and help with the cleanup like picking up branches from the huge tree which seems to be constantly losing branches in the cemetery... or trimming back the overgrown shrubbery like has been done near the Gallop markers. Thank you to whomever took it upon themselves to do that cleanup, and also to anyone in the future who lends a helping hand with cemetery cleanup. Chandler Township does pay someone to mow, but the township funds are limited for this purpose, so the maintenance person can only be expected to do just so much. So, on the Gallop site are also four flat stones, one with "Mary," one with "Grandpa" and the other two are blank. Possibly one of the blank stones could have been placed for Elisha's 12 year old daughter who died in 1882 as noted in the news article below. ~ Karla Howard Buckmaster
Obituary for Jane Gallop below: Sarah "Jane" Bergdorf was born in New York 14 October 1830 and died 18 May 1909 in Bear Creek Township. Her obituary below stated that she was to be buried at Springvale... often the Gallop Cemetery was also called Springvale. The Gallop Cemetery, however, does not have a known identified marker for Jane Gallop even though her husband Elisha had the tombstone in the above photo, with engravings of his death, and of his and Jane's daughter-in-law Mary on the other side of Elisha's tombstone. If anyone knows anything more about the burial of Jane Gallop, please contact: The webmaster of this Chandler Website. Elisha and Jane's six children, listed in Jane's obituary, remained in the vicinity of Charlevoix and Emmet counties. George Gallop married Constance "Connie" Weber and lived on a farm very close to this Gallop Cemetery and are the cemetery's namesake. Elisha and Jane's son William Henry lived near Walloon Lake and was the caretaker for the Walloon Lake County Club at the time of William's death in 1912.

Records in 1901 and also 1907 show that George E. Gallop was a Highway Commissioner
from Chandler Township Charlevoix County MI.
The Gallop Farm was adjacent to the Gallop Cemetery at one time,
but the farm is now (in 2013) owned by Dennis Hass and his wife.
Death Certificate Below: Glenn Arthur Gallop's death certificate stated that Glenn Arthur Gallop was buried in the Chandler Cemetery 1 May 1907. Two small markers [seen in photos two rows above left] are close to the other engraved Gallop markers in the Gallop Cemetery, but no particular marker is engraved as being that of Glenn Arthur Gallop. Glenn's parents are George & Mary Corbett Gallop, both of New York. Glenn, born 16 March 1887 in Michigan, was only 20 years, 1 month, 13 days old when he died of Appendicitis on 29 April 1907, as signed by Dr. A.J. McKillop of Wolverine MI. Glenn's father George Gallop, photo above right, of Springvale MI was the Informant, and Michel Cryderman? of Wolverine MI was the Undertaker. |
George E. Gallop was married three times. George's wives were:
1] Mary Corbett 2] Clara Burghdorf (divorced in 1911) 3] Constance "Connie" Weber. While the woman in the photo above appears to be Connie, it is not certain. Does anyone know? Photo Above: In 2016 the Great Grandnephew of George E. Gallop, Glenn Gallop of Texas, contacted me to tell that he had the 15 January 1999 letter Glenn had received from George E. and Connie Weber Gallop's son George. Glenn had sent a copy of the above photo with George E. Gallop and an unidentified woman to Connie's son George. George replied: "Thanks a million for the picture you sent me of my father. I was wondering if the lady that was with him would have been his first wife [Mary Corbett]. He had two children, Raymond and Mary, but we never saw them after we lost my dad." So, from George's letter, it can be determined that the woman in the photo is definitely NOT Connie, because Connie's own son George would certainly have recognized her if it had been Connie. So, now if anyone has any new information, please contact me. ~ Karla Howard Buckmaster

Below Left: 21 October 1926 Petoskey News Review death notice stated George Gallop had passed the night before, which would have made his death date 20 October 1926, NOT 21 October 1926 as stated on his Death Certificate, NOR 16 November 1926 as stated on his tombstone. It would seem that the newspaper's death date for George Gallop would be MOST CORRECT.
Death Certificate Below Right: George Gallop, the son of Elisha & Jane Bergdorf Gallop, both of New York, was living in Chandler Township when he died 21 October 1926. He was buried in Chandler Cemetery 23 October 1926. George died from Primary Anemia and Pernichous with a duration of six months.

Article Below: It is not certain, but perhaps the William Gallop of the 1881 article below is the son of Elisha and Sarah "Jane" Bergdorf Gallop. Elisha was buried in the Gallop Cemetery so this son may very well have stayed in the Chandler Township area as noted in the article below. If anyone else has a thought as to whom this William Gallop may be, please contact the webmaster. I do show that this son was born 1849 and died 1912, so certainly age-wise he could be the one in the 1881 article.

Information stated on Find-A-Grave is for Harriet Heaton Houvener having been born and dying in Huron County, Michigan. "An old man was seated upon a monument busily employed in deepening with his chisel the letters of the inscription. Motives of the most sincere devotion induced him to dedicate years to perform this tribute to the memory of the deceased, he considering himself as fulfilling a sacred duty while renewing to the eyes of posterity the decaying emblems of their forefathers."

Will Mackie's sister Marion Mackie Wood had written in her diary on December 3, 1951: "66 years ago we arrived in Vanderbilt. The conductor told Mama [Marion Halfpenny Mackie]- 'Well, mam, you've got to the land of Eternal snow.' There was mother-very imposing in a grey dolman coat.- Nell 13, Kittie 11 carrying the family birdcage-me 8-pasting my nose on the window, Emma 6 catching sight of Will on the depot platform-I can see his ice blue eyes now when he spied us." This must have been when Marion's family was just moving to Chandler Township... evidently her father John Mackie had already traveled to Northern Michigan, along with her brother Will, and they were greeting the rest of the family from the platform.
Bobby Mackie [son of Ward and Creo Mackie] was only about 4 years old when his Grandpa William Mackie died. Bob remembers sitting at the breakfast table and William's head dropped to the table and he had died of a heart attack.
Marion Mackie Wood, William's sister, always referred to her brother as "Uncle Will". She wrote in her September 18, 1937 diary: "Uncle Will died this morning. Ward came as we were finishing the milking. A rainy disagreeable day. We went over in P.M. but they had taken him to Boyne City." AND September 20, 1937: "We buried Will today- It was a large funeral, and a sad one. Belle drove us, and we found the cattle at Springvale afterward. Keith and Bobbie were so good during the funeral." [Will was buried in the East Chandler Cemetery according to his death certificate.] |
Death Certificate at Left: Florence Adelia Hughes Mackie, daughter of Robert "Robe/Roby" & Susan B. Amerson Hughes, both of Canada, died 4 October 1914 in Chandler Township. Theron later married Grace Lucille Hayes in Detroit MI, and had a family with her of Connie and Thomas Joseph "Tom". Theron worked and retired from Chrysler having attained an important position within the company. Theron died in Detroit in 1971.

and was buried in Springvale, but no evidence of burial in Gallop Cemetery exists.
A descendant of Rufus F. Morris is seeking information to tell where Rufus actually is buried. According to the 1910 Census for Hudson Township, Rufus was living with his son John, who signed the death certificate, and John's family. John was a wood cutter in the chemical wood industry. On this 1910 Hudson Township Census, the Morris Family was living not too far from the John L. and Katie Wireman Howard household, also in Hudson Township. The John L. Howard Family later was included on the Chandler Township census records.
Rufus had been married to Esther (Hazen) Morris. She was buried in the Old Walton Junction Cemetery, Walton Junction, Grand Traverse County, Michigan.

~ Arabella Scott Nabb ~
Arabella S. Thorne Nabb, wife of Simon Bolivar Nabb, lived in the Village of Springvale at one time (on 1910 census living with son-in-law. Daughter Emma had died in 1907). Her daughter Emma Liquori Allen was born 19 November 1854 in Illinois, and passed away in Chandler Township Charlevoix County Springvale MI 24 November 1907. Emma was not buried in the Gallop Cemetery however, as Emma's death certificate [Lower Right] stated she was buried in Grand Rapids MI. The informant W. R. Allen of Springvale Mich. was her husband. Another source stated Mr. Allen's name was William Ralston Allen (born 10 April 1848 in Franklin County Conway MA). Emma Ligouri and William Allen had a daughter Bessie Eleanor Allen born March 1884.

Death Certificate Above for Arabella Scott Nabb/Nobb listed W.R. Allen of Springvale MI as the Informant. With the lack of information about Arabella, Mr. Allen probably did not know Arabella well, although he may have been Arbella's son-in-law. No parents' names were listed, and the date of birth is listed as September; different than engraved on her tombstone of 22 November 1832. Arabella died 22 April 1915, at 82 years old, from "Broncho Pneumonia" as signed by Dr. A.J. McKillop of Wolverine MI. W.H. Clark was the Registrar.

I have not seen a tombstone listed for Maud Ogle, but in July of 1996, Al Joseph recorded the tombstones in the Gallop Cemetery and listed: "Ogle, Maud b. 1881 d. 1893." I have seen no reference to this Maud Ogle otherwise. ~ Karla Howard Buckmaster
LATER (19 September 2018) : I dug around the base of this tombstone, and was amazed to see a marker for Maud Ogle 1881 - 1893. "In My Father's House Are Many Mansions"
Inscription on other side of stone for John Wesley Parmater:
3 August 1831 ~ 1 April 1908
3 August 1831 ~ 1 April 1908
According to the above Chandler Township Charlevoix County death certificate, John Wesley Parmater was born 4 October 1831 in New York to John W. [of Massachusetts] and unknown mother of Manistee MI. John died of "Chronic Bronchitis" 1 April 1 1908 at 76 years 5 months and 27 days old, as a farmer. So John was born 4 October 1831. John was married and had 3 children with all 3 still living. He was buried 3 April 1908 in the Chandler Cemetery. John Parmater of Springvale MI was the Informant. William H. Clark was the Registrar and C.G. Gibson of Vanderbilt MI was the Undertaker. Contrary to the death certificate, the tombstone inscription states that John W. Parmater was born Aug. 3, 1831 and died April 1, 1908.
The tombstone stated Mary C. Fairman Parmater wife of John W. Parmater died July 1900. According to the below death certificate Mary Parmater was the daughter of Frank Fairman. Mary died 11 July 1900 in Chandler Township Charlevoix County MI at 40 years old, so she was born about 1860. Mary was born in Michigan, and married when 22 years old. When she died, she was the mother of one child with one living. So, perhaps the death certificate above was for Mary's father-in-law since the death certificate of John W. Parmater had had 3 children with 3 living by 1908... unless he remarried. The death certificate above stated John W. Parmater was born in 1831, so was a great deal older than Mary Fairman Parmater. [LATER, another source stated that Mary was 28 years younger than her husband John, so John W. Parmater was her husband.] Find-A-Grave stated that John Wesley Parmater also married Emma Augusta Jenny in 1879.
It appears a third grave site is on the Parmater lot, but no other marker.
Additional information on Find-A-Grave was added for John Wesley Parmater:
"John was one of eight known children born to Charles Parmater and Rhoda Stone. He married Mary C. Fairman, daughter of Franklin Fairman and Hannah Van Giesen, in Watrousville, Tuscola County, Michigan on April 9, 1882. Mary was 28 years younger than John. At the time of their marriage John was a farmer in Juniata Township, Tuscola County, where Mary's family also lived.
John had four brothers and three sisters. Two of John's brothers, William F. Parmater and Dr. Nathan L. Parmater, lived in Otsego County, Michigan, which borders on Charlevoix County where John lived. Both William and Nathan had previously lived in Tuscola County, Michigan. Another brother, Charles, a farmer, died in Tuscola County. The youngest of the siblings, Harvey, died during the Civil War while serving in an Ohio battery. John's sisters, Elizabeth, Eunice, and Rhoda, all moved to Wisconsin where they raised their families, died, and were buried.
John and Mary had three children, one of whom was John Parmater, Jr.
John Sr. passed away in Chandler Township, Charlevoix County, Michigan, at the age of 76 years, 5 months, and 27 days. Mary had passed away there on July 11, 1900 at the age of 41 years, 8 months and 17 days."

From Thursday February 23, 1905 Newspaper article that Marion Mackie Wood, sister to Nellie Mackie Pearson, had saved:
“A HOLOCAUST The Home of Supervisor Pearson Burned---Two Daughters, One Son Lose Lives, One of the most terrible disasters in the history of Charlevoix County occurred early last Thursday morning in Springvale Township [Actually in Chandler Township]. The home of Supervisor Frank Pearson was totally destroyed by fire, and two daughters, aged 13 and 11 and one son aged seven years, were burned to death in their beds. The three children slept up stairs, while Mr. Pearson and wife [Nellie] and their youngest child [Marval], a baby slept below. When the fire was discovered by Mr. Pearson he was so filled with the fumes of smoke that he had a hard time to arouse himself. However, he managed to get out and his first thought was for the children upstairs. The upper story was enveloped in flames, but Mr. Pearson went to an upper window determined to rescue the children if possible. On looking through the window he discovered to his horror, that his wife had gone up from the inside to attempt a rescue of her loved ones. Mr. Pearson saw her overcome by the smoke and fire and saw her fall to the floor. He retraced his steps, and went inside and up the stairs, secured the inanimate form of his wife, and had but just reached the door steps when the upper floor went down.----[couldn’t read from fold in old paper]-----and in the biting cold of the winter morning. The father of Mrs. Pearson [John Mackie] who was stopping with them, was also without a stitch of clothes except those he slept in. After getting the wife and babe to the barn the husband and father rushed to the home of his mother and brother, about one-quarter of a mile away, and when the door was opened in response to his alarm he fell exhausted and is still in a precarious condition from his burns and smoke inhaled, as well as being partially frozen in the trip to his mother’s home [42º below zero that night]. Mrs. Pearson was immediately brought to the same place, but she, too, had received burns and was nearly frozen. Mrs. Pearson’s father, who was also in the house at the time, was able to escape by jumping through a window, but did not have time to save even his clothing; he stood the exposure better than the others. Although Mr. and Mrs. Pearson were badly burned they will recover. They were kindly cared for by the neighbors, and Mr. Pearson’s brother, Register of Deeds, W.J.Pearson, who was at Boyne Falls at the time, went immediately to their assistance. The bodies of the three children were found in the ruins, burned to a crisp. Mr. Pearson is well known here, having been supervisor of his township for several years. It is needless to say that the sympathy of all for Mr. and Mrs. Pearson is widespread and deep.” |
Nellie’s health failed after her 3 oldest children died in their Springvale home fire February 16, 1905. Nellie's funeral was held in the United Brethern Church which was across the road from the Gallop Cemetery at that time. Nellie's obituary told that “She was a patient sufferer. Many warm friends of family who knew her cheerfulness and kindness mourn her death”. Family members have always said that Nellie died of a broken heart.

After the lichen was brushed off in 2013, and because the engraving was cut very deeply into the granite, the information still all showed up very well, even though the tombstone itself is flat. The tombstones for Nellie Pearson, and for the children, were covered in mildew in 2001, and when that was brushed off, the information, not having been cut into the granite, had eroded, especially with the engraving being on the top of a flat tombstone. The engraving on the baby tombstone has continued to hold up because the engraving was placed on the side of the marker.

It was a very rainy day but the school house was crowded full. The Rev Townsend preached - he preached Father Pearson's [funeral] 1 year ago tomorrow. He spoke mostly about the glories of Heaven and he pictured how we would have them again and know them and love them always. It is very hard to be parted but we must bow in submission to God's will and trust Him to reunite us in the morning when the darkness is over."
The Death Certificates recorded for cause of death for each of the three children; Lila, Esther and John: "Life lost in burning house."

When the Gallop Cemetery was recorded in 1996 by Al Joseph, he noted that a stone was broken in half (Above), but he was able to read: "Nellie Pearson b. Dec 21, 1869 d. May 30, 1984 Wife of Wm J. Pearson". Al Joseph stated he was unable to read other writing. This tombstone belonged to Nellie Cameron who was the second wife of William John Pearson (s/o James and Esther Demaray Pearson). Like William Pearson's first wife Emily Barnes, Nellie also became afflicted with tuberculosis, and died from it. William and Nellie had had children Sara "Tate", Alex, James, and Nina May. ~ Andrew J. Potts ~
Two Photos Below: Even though this Potts tombstone needs to be resurrected,
the cleaning of the marker is easily visible.
the cleaning of the marker is easily visible.
A mystery exists surrounding the headstone for Andrew J. Potts in the Gallop Cemetery. A death certificate for Andrew J. Potts has not been located in either Charlevoix County or Emmet County. The date of death on the headstone is 14 February 1891. The year of his death, however, was actually 1892, confirmed by The Petoskey Record (see 1892 news article at left) and also Stone Funeral Home via records from undertaker, Mr. C.B. Henika. Those records state that he was buried at Ayr Cemetery, not Gallop Cemetery. Andrew's father-in-law, Charles Cooney, had been living with the family, and he died in 19 September1 1891 awith the Cause of Death listed on the Death Record as "Paaralysis". Charles was 81 years 0 months and 1 day old when he passed. After Andrew Potts [born 2 October 1832 in Ohio] died, Andrew's wife Rachel [born 20 April 1837 in Stark County Ohio] married 21 January 1896 in Hillsdale MI to Addison Pound. After Addison Pound died in November 1900, Rachel Cooney Potts moved back to Springvale. Rachel Cooney Potts Pound died in the Village of Springvale, Chandler Township Charlevoix County of pneumonia on 28 December 1906. According to Rachel Cooney Potts Pound's death certificate below she was buried in "East Chandler Cemetery" which is the same as the Gallop Cemetery. The other side of Andrew's stone lists Rachel's name, "wife of A.J. Potts", but no dates. Andrew's stone also has smaller adjacent stones that say "Father" and "Mother" so it is unclear who is buried there. Can anyone add information regarding this mystery? If so, please contact Karla Howard Buckmaster.
Linda Balderson, a Potts descendant has added: "I am really not sure if Andrew is buried at Gallop, because the undertaker’s notes (Henika) that are kept by Stone Funeral Home indicate that he was buried at Ayr Cemetery. Given the fact that his marker says he died in 1891, but it was really 1892, may mean that his body was moved or that the marker at Gallop [Cemetery] was just installed when Rachel died. The “Mother” and “Father” stones just add to the mystery. Rachel’s father, Charles Cooney, lived with Rachel and Andrew after Charles’ wife died in 1872. He died on 19 Sep 1891, and it is thought, but not confirmed, that he is also buried at Gallop."
So, additional information is still needed... please contact Karla Howard Buckmaster.

~ Rama ~
Photo Above: This homemade cross tombstone had been completely hidden within the overgrown lilac bushes a couple of years ago, before the lilacs were pruned back. It was then revealed that the cross has a name of Rama on it with the upper date being Feb 27, and the lower date said Mar. Then, on 31 July 1913, upon digging out the ground below the "Mar" "9th" OR "94" is now showing. So far no information has been found about the person, or family, of this particular Rama tombstone. If anyone has any little bit of information regarding this tombstone, please contact Karla Howard Buckmaster.
The Rama cross can be seen clearly in the center of the photo below, after the Gallop Cemetery had had an afternoon of clean-up assisted by Chandler Township resident Freddie Glazier, with Sheldon and Karla Howard Buckmaster with their 11 year old grandson Kristian. The largest tree to the left had its lower branches trimmed back which opened the area up.

I have not seen this tombstone, but it was recorded in the Gallop Cemetery by Al Joseph in July 1996 as: "R---wade/Mary b. 1865 d. June 1946. (NOTE: This plot has lilacs, field stones and the above on a crude flat slab -unable to make out other letters in surname,)" ~Karla Howard Buckmaster
~ Garland Rice (Also Alvah Rice and Kendrick Rice)~
Garland Rice, who died at 2 years 10 months old, was the son of Alva and Lena Thebalt Rice, and a relative to Linda Potts Balderson. Linda wrote in September 2013 that "Stella Rice had her parents and brother Garland and 2 infants moved to St. Francis Cemetery [Petoskey MI]." Some of those transfers were confirmed as well from the diary of Marion Mackie Wood who wrote on May 5, 1943: "Stella West, Rachael Milford & 2 little West girls [Donna & Beverly] & a Mary Lou Kerner were here last nite, for quite a wile. Stella expects to have her father's body taken up this week, & moved to Petoskey." A tombstone, as seen in the above photo, still rests in Gallop Cemetery however, in 2013, for Garland Rice... so from stories passed down, it is not known if his remains and the Two Infants rest in Gallop Cemetery or St. Francis Cemetery Petoskey MI. A tombstone, however, for Garland Rice, does not show on the Find A Grave site where Alva and Lena Thebolt Rice are listed in the St. Francis Cemetery. The death certificate to the right is probably for one of the infants that was moved from the Chandler Cemetery to the St. Francis Cemetery Petoskey MI that Linda Balderson mentioned above.

Garland Rice's sister Stella Rice born 4 January 1904 in Chandler Township to Alva J. & Lena Thebolt Rice married Frank Lee West.

Kendrick Rice was the son of Cinas? and Susan Stoddard Rice. Kendrick died 3 September 1901 in Chandler Township Charlevoix County MI at 70 years 11 months, 5 days old. He was born 29 September 1831 in Michigan. Kendrick was married at age 26 and had had 6 children with 5 still living. Kendrick died of "Epithelonia? Asthemia?" as signed by Dr. A. J. McKillop of Wolverine MI. Henika of Petoskey MI was the Undertaker, and W. Rice of Springvale was the Reporter. Kendrick Rice was buried in the Cemetery No. 1 Chandler Twp. with no marker or gravesite for him in the Gallop Cemetery in 2013. Kendrick's wife Emma Reed next married Arthur Holmes. Emma Reed is also buried in the Gallop Cemetery and does have a marker engraved as Emma J. Reed.

~ Morris Sellers and wife Hannah POSSIBLY ~
No marker for Morris Sellers and wife Hannah are to be found in the Gallop Cemetery in 2013.
The only record of their possible burial in the Gallop/Springvale Cemetery is
from the obituary for Morris Sellers
found in the Tuesday 20 April 1909 Boyne Citizen Boyne City MI newspaper.
Sellers, Morris d. April 17, 1909
“Morris Sellers Accidentally Killed”
“He Falls Down From An Elevator At The Iron Furnace”
“Strikes His Head Against a Steel Girder and Lives Few Minutes”
A sad accident occurred at the plant of the Lake Superior Iron & Chemical Company last Saturday afternoon about 3:30 o’clock, by which Morris Sellers, a coal weigher, was almost instantly killed. Mr. Sellers was employed to weigh coal and his work is near the elevator, although we learn he was not employed to attend the elevator. The car was ascending upwards, when about 18 feet from the ground the cable that runs it became fastened in the side of the block through which it runs and the elevator stopped, with its load of coal. The unfortunate victim took a crowbar and climbed to the top of the elevator and began prying the cable loose, but apparently did not think of the slack cable above. When the elevator was pried loose it shot down the incline until the cable was taut, and with the weight and the sudden jerk, broke the cable and let the elevator fall to the ground. Mr. Sellers seemed to have fallen from the elevator on which he was standing when it began its decent and plunged headlong down the side, striking his head on the steel girder at the bottom of the elevator. Death was almost instantaneous, as he breathed for only a short time after he fell. The cable used was a new one which would doubtless have held under ordinary circumstances, but the terrible strain caused by the falling elevator with its load of coal was too much for it.
After the man was picked up, Dr. Charters was immediately summoned and he arrived on the scene in 15 minutes and the man was the breathing, but in five minutes breathed his last. The remains were taken to Millspaugh’s undertaking rooms and prepared for burial and his relatives notified.
Mr. Sellers leaves two children, Violet, aged seven and Icie, only three years old. The youngest has been staying with her grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Frank Scott, at Alba, while Violet has been stopping with her father at the home of her uncle, Thomas Profitt of this city. Mr. Seller’s father, Andrew Sellers, who lives in Covington, KY, had been here visiting his son and had only just left for home. He was making a short stop at Mancelona when the news reached him of his son’s death. He immediately returned here. Mr. Sellers’ father-in-law, Frank Scott, who lives at Alba, was notified and came to Boyne City on the first train.
Two brothers-in-law, Gus Woodward and Lee Patton of Mancelona are here and will remain until after the funeral.
Mr. Sellers had lived in Boyne City for three years, coming here from Mancelona.
The funeral was held this morning from the Baptist Church at nine o’clock. This early hour was decided upon because the body was taken to Springvale for burial.

~ Jacob M. & Orpha E. (Murton) Snyder ~
Jacob Snyder's Chandler Township Charlevoix County death certificate (above right) stated that Jacob Snyder was to be buried in the East Chandler Cemetery 9 November 1919. Jacob's parents were Robert [of Canada] and Eliza Moore Snyder [of New York State]. Morse was born in New York State 20 January 1852 and was 57 years 9 months and 17 days old when he died on 7 November 1919 of "Acute Cardiac Dilation" as signed by Archibald McKillop of Wolverine MI. Charles Johnson was the Registrar and H.C. Meyer of Boyne Falls MI was the Undertaker. Jacob was married to Mrs. J. M. (Orpha E. Murton) Snyder noted in the articles below. A child Albert Rupert Tousley born October 1916 to Robert and Eva Westbrook, died 18 February 1919 of Contributory "Cerebral Congestion". On the death certificate of this child, it was written that Albert Rupert Tousley was to be buried 20 February 1919, in the "Springvale Cemetery" (Gallop Cemetery).
Photo Right: It is not clear if this memorial is for the entire Tousley Family, or for a particular Tousley, and the engraving has possibly been lost to time. When the Gallop Cemetery was recorded by Al Joseph in 1996, Al recorded: "Tousley, Mina V. d. aged 2 yrs 7 mos." Al Joseph also had a reading for an "Albert Tousley b. 1847 d. 1921". |
The 1901 Charlevoix County Plat Book Patrons' Directory for Chandler Township describes A.R. Towsley [sic]: "Farming and Blacksmithing. Mr. Towsley was born in St. Lawrence County, N.Y., August 26, 1847. Enlisted March 4, 1865, in Company G, 103d N.Y. Volunteers. Served until January 18, 1966. Married November 30, 1870, to Jane M. Fetterly, of Macomb, N.Y. Have had six children, five now living." (Known children: Sons Charles Harmon 1874-1933, Robert Albert 1875-1932, Howard Alva 1878-1932, Fred O. 1886-1941, and daughter Minnie Violet/Mrs. Crites/Kreutz 1890-1967)
It does not say in the two above newspaper articles if Howard Tousley and Robert Tousley were buried in the family plot for the Tousley Family in the Gallop Cemetery, but it is assumed that they were because they were noted as "life-long residents of Chandler Hill".
Below Death Certificate for Robert Tousley (no death certificate found so far for Howard Tousley who died the same week as his brother Robert Tousley). It might be surmised that both brothers died of "Influenza and Pneumonia" as stated on Roberth's death certificate, which also stated his burial was to be in the Springvale (Gallop) Cemetery.
