"You can take the girl out of the country, but, you cannot take the country out of the girl!"
I have loved family and my local history since I was about fifteen years old. This same LOVE is the biggest reason this very website Chandler Township Charlevoix County Michigan Memories exists.
I hope every visitor to this site finds something to read and enjoy as much as I have enjoyed building this site.
Or if you wish to share some of your own Chandler Township information or photos, please let me know at:

Inis Howard Harmon has made several quilts in her Lifetime. Inis and husband Ralph Harmon, together, made the quilt in the above photo taken at the 2005 Howard Family Reunion where they donated the quilt to the silent auction. The different colors represent the various Family Lines from the John L. and Katie Wireman Howard Family from which Inis descends.

During our country’s Bicentennial Micki Howard was Co-chair of the Chandler Township Bicentennial Committee and researched the history of Chandler Township. From this work a slide-tape history was created as well as a quilt depicting the land ownership history of the area from the earliest settlers to 1976. Both were shown at the Chandler Bicentennial Celebration in 1976 and will be displayed at her program on May 21st. In addition, she will relate stories about the logging town of Springvale, Cobbs & Mitchell, a large logging company which owned more than 70% of the land in the township at one time, and the “heart of the township”, the township hall. Once a one room standard school, it is more than the present township hall, but where residents celebrate weddings, baby showers, anniversaries, graduations, and memorial services. The township board works very hard to maintain the tin ceilings and the original look of the inside. Join us next Tuesday to learn the history of yet another one of Charlevoix County's 15 townships. Light refreshments will be served.

The following partial article was found in the Sesquicentennial Edition of the Otsego County Herald-Times. Otsego County is one of the neighboring counties to Chandler Township's Charlevoix County. Consequently, the foundation and development of the two counties often mirror each other with their geography and land formation, Native American tribes, land division, lumbering, and settlement. These two pages of the article are a wonderful summary of Otsego County, and can be applied to the Charlevoix County area as well.
