United Brethren In Christ
A "Circuit Rider" Church
Also known as the Chandler Hill Church
(Located directly across from the Gallop Cemetery in Chandler Township Charlevoix County Michigan)
This was the only church building to ever exist in Chandler Township Charlevoix County MI.
Cobbs & Mitchell Inc. donated the lumber to build the church.
Built around 1906 or 1907, and fell down about 1945 from lack of care...
perhaps the members met somewhere besides this church building because a pastor was listed in 1897 as R.C. Chapman.

Nellie Mackie Pearson of Chandler Township wrote in a 29 December 1905 letter to her sister Marion Mackie Wood: "Our minister has come lives on Willie Hughe's place and we like him. Just him and wife. Their family is grown up and married. Are going to try and build a church across the road from cemetery this year if possible."

The United Brethren In Christ Church in Chandler Township has mostly disappeared,
but the foundation, or steps can still be viewed from the road as seen below.
What does remain is on private property.

Nellie Mackie Pearson lived less than a mile from this United Brethren church on Magee Road in the early 1900's. As noted in Nellie's obituary below, she and her children, as well as her husband Frank Pearson are all buried in the Gallop Cemetery, at that time referred to as "the cemetery at Springvale," just across the road from the United Brethren church.

~ Obituary ~ Nellie Mackie Pearson (1871 - 1908) Mrs. Frank Pearson died at her home in Boyne Falls on the morning of Jan. 12th. She was born at Pontiac, Mich., and moved to Springvale when 13 years old. She was one of the best known school teachers in Charlevoix county previous to her marriage, when 19 years old, to Frank Pearson. She was the mother of five children, one of whom, besides her husband survives her. The three oldest, a boy and two girls, perished in the fire when the home at Springvale burned one cold winter morning in February three years ago. Since then the mother's health has been failing. She was a patient sufferer. Many warm friends of the family who knew her cheerfulness and kindness mourn her death. The funeral was held at Springvale conducted by Rev. A. W. Baker, of Boyne Falls. She was a member of the United Brethren church. Interment took place in the cemetery at Springvale beside her children.

After Nellie died, her husband Frank remarried to Lydia Ford and had four children: 1] James married Merla Moore 2] Ford married Dorothy Dunworth 3] Louise married Roy Magee 4] Eleanor married Clark Fraley. Louise had told that her father Frank's funeral was held in the United Brethren church where Frank's first wife Nellie's funeral was also held. Frank and Lydia and their family lived in Boyne Falls MI.
A partial letter written 26 January 1906 by Nellie Mackie Pearson was about her church being built: "... now we have to hustle to raise money = the lumber will be donated in logs and cut in the mill for lumber. Won't that help this place though and seem like living = Well dear I must go and bake pies. Lots of love Nell"

Just as in the obituaries above for John Mackie and for Esther Demary Burrows,
this church was sometimes referred as East Chandler Church,
just as the Gallop Cemetery across the road from the church was called East Chandler Cemetery.
Because Chandler Township only had the one church building (Springvale),
other clergy of other denominations must have used the building as noted in the above article for Mrs. Frances Costerman in 1915.
A Costerman Family was never enumerated on the Chandler Township census records.
