Spring-Fed Waters The story of a lake in northern Michigan written by A. Theodore Halsted and published in 1997 includes one of the most complete and interesting histories of the Christian Camps that have graced the shoreline of Thumb Lake (Lake Louise).

Albert Howard had worked for the Lumbering Camp in Hudson Township collecting bungwood which was then sent by the Boyne City and South Eastern Railroad spur to the Boyne City Chemical Company. After Albert married, he often traveled to his home state of Kentucky, but when in Michigan with his own family he lived very near the Elmira MI lumber camp, and worked there. Sometime after Albert's young wife Minnie Bennett Howard died in 1923, and the lumbering industry had died down, Albert then, by at least 1930, worked as a resident caretaker, and operated a dairy farm on the property, of the Lake Louise Methodist Camp for a few years. Then, about 1937, Albert bought his own farm from the Smithingell Family only a few miles away on Magee Road, and moved his cattle there. Albert and his sons, Vernard, Virgil, and Karl "Cub", owned a fleet of row boats on Thumb Lake located at the public access.

The people of Chandler Township were often friends with the people from the Christian camps surrounding Thumb Lake.
Marion Mackie Wood wrote in her July 11, 1950 diary: "Marion had Rodger & Karla baptized last Sunday at the lake. I guess they were at Mr. Jeffries' camp for dinner."
