Chandler Township School (SD No. 6)
[Located in Section 6]
[Located in Section 6]
Known as Blane/Blain or Blaney School... the school did not last very long. On the 1901 Chandler Township plat map,
SD No. 6 was located in Section 6, the same section where the Blain Family was living at that time.
This school has also been listed as Forest Hill, and later as Camp 23 School.
Camp 23 School, however, was located in Section 16, and once owned by Wiley Latshaw.
This SD No. 6 location is confusing, and may have originally been located in Section 6, but after it was eliminated there,
became SD No. 6, but in section 16 at the Camp 23 location.

The state school inspector traveled around and visited the various county schools, including the Blain School.
The School Commissioner May L. Stewart referred to Camp 23 School as also called Forest Hill in the 1916 article below.

Nearby Emmet County, as well as Charlevoix County,
was experiencing much of "the cut-over land" from logging which was being allowed "to revert to the state"
as stated in the 1924 article below.

In 1945, Wiley Latshaw purchased the Chandler Township School building (SD No. 6) in the background in the photo below which was near the tracks of the Cobbs & Mitchell Railroad which ran into Camp 23. The school sat on Springvale Road. Wiley lived in the school house, and also, in the 1960s, used the building for space as part of his process of packing his own honey to be sent to Europe.
Marion Mackie Wood, Chandler Township resident wrote in her diary on November 2, 1945:
"They sold the school house at 23# for 250.00 to Mr. Latshaw yesterday- a lot of bidders were there to bid who wanted it for a hunting lodge- It is about falling in disrepair." Probably Marion Mackie Wood's reference to #23 was because Cobbs & Mitchell Inc.'s lumber camp #23 was in this location of Wiley Latshaw's property.
The 1938 Chandler Township Charlevoix County MI Map from Michigan Department of Conservation Field Administration Division labeled this school as "Sch. No. 23, in section 16, and it was on Springvale Road.
A hand drawn plat map of Chandler Township from 1910, or later, labeled a school near this location of Wiley Latshaw's real estate... but, no school was labeled in the section where the Blaine Family property was labeled on the hand drawn plat map. Because this is a hand drawn map, this is not a legal document, or record; used as a reference only.
