Annable Family
Frank Atkins
Frank Atkins, in the photos below, owned the property which sold to Walter and Lila Ledwick Burgess, Jr. Then, Alva and Irene Glazier purchased their farm property from Walter and Lila Burgess, the parents of Ruth (married Louis Matelski), Leslie (married Esther Spaniak) , and Winona (married Louis Kapa Jr., and Kenneth Howard, Sr.). Alva and Irene Glazier, are pictured farther down on this same webpage. Kathie Glazier Denise, daughter of Alva and Irene, thinks this property may have been owned by the railroad company, or some other company, before Frank Atkins owned it. The 40 acres of property on the 1901 Charlevoix County Plat Book the property was owned by Frank Atkins. Alva and Irene Glazier's descendants still own the farm in 2014. Fred Glazier thinks that at one time Frank Atkins' sister may have owned and built the house, and Frank owned the barn.

Benjamin Family
Maude Benjamin Gilmore was born 4 November 1920, so after the 1920 Chandler Township Charlevoix County census shown below was enumerated with the rest of her family as follows:
Benjamin William H Benjamin abt 1867 Michigan Head Rena Benjamin abt 1895 Michigan Wife Mary Benjamin abt 1916 Michigan Daughter Ruth Benjamin abt 1917 Michigan Daughter Fred Laughton abt 1874 Michigan Boarder [Laborer General Farm] Hilda Wilson abt 1903 Michigan Sister-in-law [Maid Hotel] The Benjamin family probably lived in the Village of Springvale, rather than in Springvale Towsnhip as the obituary stated. The obituary stated at the time of Maude's death in 1999 that her sisters Mary had married Ralph Ford, and Ruth had married Emerson Kreig... both Mary and Ruth were older on the 1920 Chandler Township census posted above. She also had half-brothers listed on the obituary. Maude's husband Wayne Gilmore had predeceased her. Maude was buried in the Fairview Cemetery in Gaylord. She had spent a great deal of her life living in Gaylord MI. |

Silas S. Walton...
Although Silas was born in Broome County New York, and enlisted on 25 January 1864 in Eagle MI, he spent a great deal of his life in Northern MI. His son Elbert Ernest "Bert" Walton lived on top of Charlevoix County Chandler Hill. Silas served as a Private in Battery E of the 1st Michigan Light Artillery. On 11 August 1864 he was transferred to Battery M of the same regiment. In the many engagements this regiment was a part of, one of the most notable was the battle of Nashville, Tennessee, in December of 1864. Silas was discharged on 1 August 1865, in Jackson, Michigan.

*Bert and Bertha Snyder Walton were the parents of Ernest Jacob Walton who married Marj Manley. Ernest and Marj had two children Lewis "Lewie" and James "Jimmy"who lived in the house which is now (2017) owned by Dennis and Micki Howard on Walton Road. Ernest and Marj were both buried in the Gallop Cemetery Chandler Township MI. Bert and Bertha remained on Chandler Hill most of their lives.
Marion Mackie Wood wrote in an undated letter: "Ernest Walton's house burned night before last, poor kids, & they had to run to Bud's [Gallop's] in their nighties. Guess they lost all their things. I feel so bad about it."

Clipping Above: "We have to record the death of one of our early settlers. Silas Walton died April 6th, after a long and severe illness, and was buried April 6th, the funeral sermon being preached by Elder Annikun (?)."
Reuben Henry Walton, in the article and death certificate, was a brother to Ernest Walton
because Ernest's father was Silas Walton.

Melville and Ella Walton are in the photo below. Note that Ella was a second cousin to President Grover Cleveland. Before Melville, Ella was married to his cousin Edgar Jones, so Charles Jones is Ella's son. Ella died at "Charley's" home in Traverse City MI. Another Walton descendant stated that she believes that another of the Jones Clan married a Cleveland... meaning Ira and Abiah Walton Jones. Abiah was sister of Silas Walton. The two families came north to the Petoskey area together and were very much intertwined. Ira Jones also served in the Civil War and is buried at Greenwood Cemetery, Petoskey MI. Most of the Jones Family migrated west to Snohomish County WA to work in the lumbering business about 1905.
Melville and Ella Walton had four children, one of whom was Iva m. William B. Everhart. Iva was born 3 September 1892 in Chandler Township. Iva died in 1945.

Photo Above: On the 1880 Chandler Township census, Edna Walton and Marcus Bradford were close neighbors before marriage, with each living with their own families at that time. Marcus was the stepson in the household of James W. Hall. Of course, the 1890 census records were destroyed and do not exist, but Edna F. Walton married 24 August 1892 in Petoskey MI to Marcus Bradley. Edna moved to Eaton Rapids after he deserted her and the children in about 1901 or 1902. Her descendants still live in Eaton Rapids MI. Before that, however, Edna and Marcus were listed on the 1900 Chandler Township census with son Walter M. b. Feb 1897, and daughter Eve R. b. Apr 1899. Marcus had wanted for Edna and the children to move from Michigan to California, but Edna did not want to move. So, while Edna and the children were visiting an aunt in southern Michigan, Marcus sold their northern Michigan farm, and desserted them. Edna and the children, for basic survival purposes, moved to a farm near Eaton Rapids to take care of Marcus' aging uncle. Edna eventually inherited the cousin's Eaton County MI home.

Theron Connell and Kittie Mackie Connell
Kittie Mackie, daughter of William and Florence Hughes Mackie, married Theron Joseph "TJ" Connell 31 August 1925 in Detroit MI. Both Kittie and Theron Connell had been residents of Chandler Township with Theron listed on both the 1910 Census (with Croy/Cray Family) and the 1920 Census in Chandler Township. When Theron and Kittie had been married just a year and a day, Kittie was brushing her hair, suffered a stroke, and died at only 24 years old. She was buried in the Evergreen Cemetery in Detroit MI. Theron later married Grace Lucille Hayes in Detroit MI, and had a family with her of Connie and Thomas Joseph "Tom". Theron worked and retired from Chrysler having attained an important position within the company. Theron died in Detroit in 1971.
Crago Family
The identifications for this photo are unclear... labeled as Archie standing with Iva Crago seated, and unknown girl. On the Chandler township 1910 Census Record however, it shows James A. Crego/Crago born about 1871 with wife Prudence and a daughter named Iva [the Iva name was on the label, but for a male?] born about 1904. The same census record had listed in a separate household an Archybold Crego/Crago born about 1876 in Ohio and died in 1955. Could this be Archie as listed on the photo? This Archybold's occupation was listed as "Merchant General Store"... so, is that one of the same men in the photo inside the general store in Springvale or, maybe not, as it is thought that the general store that Crago was associated was separate from the Cobbs & Mitchell General Store. The Crago name eventually connected to Petoskey MI with Mr. Crago owning several Crago food markets in Petoskey, at various locations. Archibald and May [Winters] Crago had a daughter Ruth, and three sons; Chester, Bill and Ford.
A.J. Crago obituary below: Archibald Joseph Crago was in the grocery business for 50 years, starting in Springvale and coming to Petoskey in 1923.

Ralph Dye Family
Ralph Dye Sr. signed his name as the enumerator for the 1910 Chandler Township census records, but his family was not enumerated in the township. He was not the enumerator for the 1920 Chandler Township census records shown below, but his family was listed as follows:
Dye Ralph Dye abt 1872 Michigan Head [Sawyer Lumber Mill] Cora M Dye abt 1881 Ohio Wife Vera Dye abt 1900 Michigan Daughter Lloyd M Dye abt 1903 Michigan Son Gail I Dye abt 1907 Michigan Daughter Raymond Dye abt 1909 Michigan Son Geraldine Dye abt 1913 Michigan Daughter Ralph Dye abt 1916 Michigan Son Neil Dye abt 1918 Michigan Son |
Because Ralph and Cora moved back to Resort Township Emmet County MI in 1920, some of their family's history is noted on page 110 of the book titled Resort Township Remembers. In part it stated:
"Ralph Dye was born in Mecosta County and Cora McNeal Dye was born and raised in Ohio. Their forefathers came from England and Ireland and both Mr. and Mrs. Dye's ancestry has been documented back to the American Revolution. Ralph and Cora were married in 1899.
Mr. Dye had a sawmill in Springvale and a lumber camp in Chandler Township for many years." ... They grew seed potatoes which were an important farm crop in Emmet County. Besides the seven children listed in the 1920 census record above, they had a daughter Reah who died in infancy.

This photo is from the collection of Micki and Dennis Howard and shows the Burgess/Eastwood family outside the Eastwood home. The little girl in the front row is Lila. In the back row are Lena, Nora, Flora Fetterly (sister-in-law of George), Rhoda Eastwood and front row Dalton Eastwood, Lila, John Eastwood, and Alfred Eastwood.
Frank and Rhoda Fetterly Eastwood who were both buried in the Gallop Cemetery on top of Chandler Hill were the parents of Alfred Eastwood in the top Eastwood photos above left and right. Frank and Rhoda's children in birth order were: Cora Belle, Carl, Earl "John", Nora, Alva, Evelena "Lena", Dalton, and Alfred Edward Eastwood. Carl Eastwood, and sister Lena who married Tomas Ledwick, were both buried in Gallop Cemetery. Lila, in the above center photo, first married Mr. Burgess and had Ruth, Leslie and Winona. He died at a young age. Then, Lila married Perry "Pud" Magee that the Magee Road on top of Chandler Hill was named. Lila (1915-1993) and Perry O. (1909-1982) were buried in the Boyne Valley Cemetery Boyne Falls MI. Dalton Eastwood married Ellen Sage, and they also are buried in the Boyne Valley Cemetery Boyne Falls MI.
Photo Above: Earl "John" Eastwood was first married to Eveline Green, the daughter of Edwin Rasemond and Sarah Myriah "Sally" Ashley Green. Eveline Green (1882-1943) was buried in the Boyne Valley Township Cemetery Boyne Falls MI.
Shawn Beeler (owner of the tintype photo below left) stated the metal picture had "Green" written on the back. Shawn believes the tintype is of Sarah Myriah "Sally" Ashley Green, wife to Edwin Green.
LATER: Amy (Drayton) Griffith, GGGrandaughter of Edwin and Sarah Ashley Green, has submitted the photos below labeled as Edwin Rasemond/Richard Green and Sarah Ashley Green. The likenesses of the lady in the tintype and the definite labeled are NOT the same person. Amy wonders if the tintype lady was perhaps Edwin Green's first wife Harriet L. Root (1853-1938) noting the clothing does match the time period.

"Edwin R Green and his 2nd wife Sarah Ashley had a daughter Edith Margaret Green. Edith married my great grandfather Henry William Bourbonnais. Their daughter Lillian Beatrice (Bourbonnais) Drayton was my grandmother. She married Bert William Drayton. I am also related to the Eastwood’s, Warner’s, Ashley’s to name a few. These names are from my father’s mother’s side of the family. My father’s father (Bert Drayton)’s side of the family lived in Chandler township also in about 1910. Bert married Jennie May Watterson. Bert’s parents lived in Boyne and are buried there." ~ Written by Amy Drayton Griffith
Sarah Ashley, daughter of Nathan and Margaret Wiss Ashley, married Edwin Rasemond Green. Sarah and Edwin's children were: Eveline/Evelyn m. 1) Arthur Mitchell and had a son Cecil Mitchell 2) Wilburt Guy Rice 3) Earl "John" Eastwood; Celden E.; Edith M.; Ruby Gordon; Agnes.
Because of the writing on the backs of the two photo cards below, it is thought that the man in the left card could be Eveline Eastwood's brother Celden, and the lady in the center in the right card could be Eveline Eastwood's sister Ruby.

Earl "John" Eastwood had two sons with second wife Florence Padgett whom he married in 1944.
His oldest son was named Earl Eugene (obituary shown below the obituary for Earl Eastwood Sr.'s).
Earl "John" Eastwood spent all of his life in Chandler Township, except for his first two years of life.

Earl Eugene Eastwood
March 26, 1947 - September 2, 2011
Earl Eastwood passed away suddenly on September 2, 2011 while gazing out over his farm after taking a run. He suffered a cardiac arrest and was quickly taken home to be with his Lord and Savior.
Earl is survived by his wife Linda, his children Kirtland, Shawn, and John, as well as hia Daughter Selena Peterson-Baker, his brother Ed Eastwood, his mother Florence Barnes, and his granddaughter Ava Grace Eastwood.
Earl was born at home on March 26, 1947 in the midst of a raging snow storm on Chandler Hill. He spent most of his life farming on the family's centennial farm. Earl was a 1965 graduate of Boyne City High School and prided himself for being a standout runner on the school track team. He obtained a B.S. in Education from Eastern Michigan University and ran on the university cross country and track and field teams.
Following college, Earl was drafted into the Army during the Vietnam War. He had received 3 letters of commendation for his outstanding contribution to the Army cross country team. He was also a member of the U.S. Army boxing team. Earl served as a Pershing Missile crewman in Germany where he set the coordinates on a nuclear warhead.
Earl returned to the farm after the military and worked at Georgia Pacific for 28 years. After retirement, he worked in the sporting goods department at Wal-Mart in Petoskey, Michigan. Earl spent 5 years as the cross country coach at Vanderbilt High School and was very proud of all his team members.
The highlight of Earl's life was the birth of his granddaughter, Ava on December 17, 2008. While Ava's mom worked and attended college, Papa took care of Ava until she was 18 months old. They had a very special bond with one another.
On August 23, 2011, Earl had what he called man's greatest honor when he walked his daughter Shawn down the aisle on the day of her marriage to Anthony Beeler. Earl will be greatly missed by his friends, family, and all of the young people he mentored.
Visitation will be held 2-4pm and 6-8pm Tuesday, September 6, 2011 at Stackus Funeral Home in Boyne City. A funeral service will be held 11:00am Wednesday, September 7, 2011 at Boyne City United Methodist Church with Pastor Wayne McKenney officiating. Burial will follow at Gallup Cemetery in Chandler Township.

and
Connie Gallop and Sons George Jr. and William "Bud" Gallop
As noted in Constance "Connie" Gallop's obituary below, she was born in 1889 in Marquette MI. Marquette is noted on the photo below left of Connie's mother Sarah Schroeder Weber, taken, obviously, while still living there, and before moving to Weber Lake MI where she lived with Ferdinand "Fred" Weber. Fred's name was labeled on the back of the photo below center, as "Fred A. Weber stone mason". Unfortunately, all of the men have hammers, so it is unknown which man in the photo is actually Fred. Connie also lived in the Weber Lake area previous to moving to nearby Chandler Township where she taught school. Connie Weber Gallop graduated from County Normal in June 1911... See a photo of Connie with her classmates on the Chandler Township School webpage.
Connie (Weber) Gallop was born to Ferdinand A. Weber and Sarah Schroeder. Connie's grandparents were Ferdinand (1) Weber and Veronica Weber. Ferdinand (1) and Veronica are buried in the Wolverine, Michigan, cemetery with a large headstone. A smaller headstone lists Ferdinand’s service in the Civil War. It is unknown where Ferdinand (2) and Sarah are buried, but they also may be buried in the Wolverine cemetery. Henry W. Weber is also listed on the headstone along with Ferdinand, Veronica, Annie and Henry.

Gilbert and Harrington Families
Augustus "Gus" Gilbert's family was listed on the both the 1900 and 1910 Chandler Township, Charlevoix County, Michigan, census records, but not in Chandler Township after those two census records. Some time between 1910 and 1920 this Gilbert Family moved back to Eagle, Clinton County, Michigan.

Frank H Gilbert Aug 1882 Michigan Son [Day Laborer]
Prudenc Gilbert Aug 1884 Michigan Daughter
Byron E Gilbert Feb 1892 Michigan Son
Robert G Gilbert May 1896 Michigan Son
It seems Frank H. Gilbert who married Veda V. Jennings in Petoskey, Michigan, was the only Gilbert family member who stayed in the Charlevoix County area, and never left northern Michigan. Frank showed up on the 1920 Census in the Boyne Valley area of Charlevoix County. Prudence Gilbert was the first wife of James Arthur Crego. Prudence had died young in 1912 at only 28, in Oneida, Eaton County, Michigan. Prudence and James had had one child, Iva Dell Crego, who later married Claude W. Lapp (see photo below of Prudence and Iva). James Crego's second wife Laura M. Kempf was the mother of seven children with James, including Sharon Ellsworth Crego who was a rural mail carrier for Chandler Township for many years. James and Laura moved their family to a farm in Chandler Township in 1932.

Plat maps showed both related Gilbert and Harrington families owned properties very near the township cemetery, now the Gallop Cemetery. The Gilbert Land and part of the Harrington land was later sold to the Ashman Family. The Hines Family lived on the Harrington property at some point in time.

Albert Harrington was born April 1859 in Barry County, Michigan. He married Emma Blough in 1877 and they were living in Chandler by 1900. Albert Harrington's family was listed only on the 1900 Chandler Township, Charlevoix County, Michigan, census record.

Albert, and his sister Ella, Harrington's mother Jane (Eddy) Harrington Blough Forrester died 18 July 1902, possibly when she was visiting, or living, with her children Albert and/or Ella in Chandler Township. Jane's Michigan Death Certificate stated she was the daughter of William and Clista (Hancock) Eddy. The Death Certificate also stated Jane's burial was to be 20 July 1902 in the Springvale Township, Charlevoix County, Michigan, Cemetery, which would have been what is now the Gallop Cemetery. No tombstone engraved with her name, however, exists for her in the Gallop Cemetery... nor does it seem that any other Harrington or Gilbert Family members ever were buried in the Gallop Cemetery as no tombstones are engraved as such. See the entered information on this same web site on the Gallop Cemetery web page for additional information about Jane Forrester by clicking HERE.
When Jane was married to Edmond Harrington, they had three children: Lavere, Albert, and (Alvaretta) Ella V. Harrington. Ella was born in January 1864 in Albion, Calhoun County, Michigan and died in 1943. In 1879 in DeWitt, Clinton County, Michigan, Ella married Gus Gilbert born 1958-9 and died 1941 (shown in the Chandler 1900 Census above). Ella and Gus "Jacob" Gilbert were in Chandler Township by 1896. They were in Eagle, Clinton County, Michigan, by 1920. Only one of Ella and Gus's seven children, Robert G. Gilbert was born in Chandler Township (1896).

Helen Sciezka has no photos of two other surviving siblings; Robert Guy Gilbert, Sr. 1896-1964) and Myron Freddy Gilbert. Of Gus and Ella's children, only Robert Gilbert appears to have been born in Chandler in 1896.

The 1910 Chandler Township census record below included a Hager Family as follows, perhaps connected to article above regarding Earl Hager, and most likely connected to the Elmer Hager of the wedding announcement of the article right.

Hines Family
Howardine Wood Bush Plumb wrote the following in her scrapbook regarding the photo above: "The Hines Family lived across the road from Connie Gallop's-near where Gallops barn is. Dale, their son, went with Howardine's cousin Alma [White] a while. Sid, the father, was the carpenter who built Howard and Marion Wood's house on Chandler Hill MI. Sid's wife was Grace and the other person in the photo is unidentified. They had a daughter after they left Springvale." This family is listed on the 1910 Chandler Township census records, where they had had a son Arthur D. Hines born about 1892.
The photo above and the two photos below are from the Eastwood Collection of Photos. The photos do not make any identity of the house having been the same house as that for the Hines Family in the photo two above. The houses are so similar that these three photos are being placed next to the Hine Family house photo, until someone might contact the webmaster with additional information. The writing below of what was on the back of the photo references an "Alfred." Earl "John" Eastwood who would have had these photos in his collection did have a brother Alfred... not sure who "Uncle George" may have been??
Arthur C. "Art" Holmes
Arthur "Art" Holmes sat for a portrait by Photographer Eaton of Boyne Falls MI. On the 1900 Chandler Township census record, Arthur Holmes was born September 1862 to Abram Holmes in Michigan. He was a "boarder" in the home of Charles and Ella Potts' family in 1900. On the 1910 Chandler Township census record, Arthur Holmes was listed as born ten years earlier, about 1852, with a wife Emma [Emma Jane Reed who had been previously married to Kendrick Rice, the father of Ella Rice Potts]. The 1920 Chandler Township census record is noted as the same information as in 1910 with wife Emma, and still no others listed in the household. On the 1901 Charlevoix County plat book in the Patrons' Directory, an R.E. Holmes [perhaps a relative] was listed with his post office listed as Dot.

Albert Howard Family
Albert Howard was born in Kentucky the son of John L. and Katie Wireman Howard. Albert moved from Kentucky to Michigan in 1900. When he moved to Chandler Township, he lived on Magee Road in the home in the photo above. Albert is in the photo above with L>R: Grandson Rodger Howard, Son Karl "Cub" Howard, Granddaughter Karla Howard, Friend/Neighbor Dave Morse, and Albert in background right. Albert lived in this house until he died in 1954.
The house in the photo above taken in 1976 is located directly across the road from where Albert Howard's home was located on Magee Road. Albert's son Karl "Cub" Howard and his wife Marion Bush Howard [later Starr], built this original log cabin and lived in it until they purchased the Hughes property about a mile and a half away on Chandler Hill Road. Cub and Marion moved from this log cabin in about 1943 or 1944.
John and Bernice Howard Family
Herbert Howard Sr.'s Family
Herbert "Herb" Howard Sr., the son of Noah & Annie Sanders Howard, along with Herb's family, spent a great deal of his life in Chandler Township Charlevoix County Michigan (listed on the 1920 Chandler Census Records). Herb & Ida Hadix Howard's daughter Ida "Marie" Howard Nessen was encouraged by her daughter Pat Nessen Sumner to write Marie's memories. Pat has shared her mother's precious remembrances which include glimpses of what it was like to live in Chandler Township, and the surrounding area, during the first half of the 1900's. Herb & Ida's 14 children in order of age were: Maynard, Melvena, Belle, Woodrow, Gretchen, Gold, Doris, Ida "Marie, Twins-Robert & Myrtle who died at birth [buried Otsego County], Herbert Jr., Aubrey, Russell Noah [died at 3 days old and buried in Gallop Cemetery], and David "Elmer".
Herb and Ida Hadix Howard's daughter Belle Howard was born in Chandler Township
when Belle's family was living near Herb's father Noah's farm.
This article from p. 18 of the 20 August 1987 Herald Times/Sesquicentennial Issue talks about

Noah and Anna Sanders Howard
Noah and Annie Sanders Howard's grandson Dennis Howard who still lives on top of Chandler Hill in 2017 tells:
Noah and Annie bought the farm where Dennis' brother Jack still resides. They bought the farm from John Hall who was a Civil War veteran. They moved into the home a year later, and lived there the rest of their lives.
At some point, Noah and Annie bought the Brown Farm across the road where their son Herb Howard Sr. and his family lived. Also Noah and Annie's son John Howard's family lived on the Brown Farm property for a period of time before moving into Noah and Annie's home.

Although Anna Howard's obituary does not specifically state it, she was living on Walton Road Chandler Hill when she died. Sharon Crego who lived on Chandler Hill near where the Townsend Family lived, about a mile from where Anna and Noah lived, remembered the year that Anna Howard died. The ground had frozen so hard that when the snow began to thaw in March, it could not drain into the ground, and thus a small lake was created between Noah Howard's house [John and Bernice lived there too while taking care of Noah and Anna], and the neighbor Carl Clark's residence down the road. Sharon told that when he rode the school bus past there that John's 1933-34 Dodge truck sat stalled in the middle of the new lake where John had tired to drive through it on the road that was covered by water. Consequently, a motor hearse had to drive through the field to get to the house to get Anna after she died.
Worden and Edith Jacobs Family ~ [Koons Family]
Worden Grove Jacobs' family was listed on the 1910 Chandler Township census records, with Worden's occupation listed as "Fireman Railroad Station". Worden (1871~1951) and Edith Caukell Koons (1878~ ) in 1910 had daughters Julia (7 August 1899 ~ 3 November 1978), and Alice born (1907 ~ 1996). Alice was born in Springvale MI so the family was in Chandler Township at least by then, 2 August 1907. No Jacobs were listed on the 1920 Chandler Township census record, so they must have left the township by 1920. The two photos left, and center, below recorded the arrival, and homestead of the Jacob Family. The photo on the right taken in 1976 showed the home of Julia Jacob Koons, once more in Chandler Township, on Springvale Road. In 1923 Julia married Hubert Charles Koons (1898 ~ 1979) in Battle Creek MI. Julia Octavia Jacobs Koons passed away in Jackson County Jackson MI.
Wiley Latshaw
(8 February 1886 in Sullivan County Indiana ~ 7 January 1976 in Indiana)
(8 February 1886 in Sullivan County Indiana ~ 7 January 1976 in Indiana)
Wiley Latshaw, in the photo below left, was not listed on a Chandler Township census record previous to the released census records through 1940. The 1930 Chandler Township plat map, however, had 40 acres in Section 17 listed as Latshaw... the same section where Camp 23 logging camp had been located in earlier years, where Wiley spent his years living in Chandler Township. Because the property had been a logging camp, was why Wiley had so many various buildings on his properties. Wiley lived in any one of his properties at different times in his life. When Wiley registered in 1918 with the Local Board for Charlevoix County, his mailing address was Clarion which was then often the mailing address for those living in Chandler Township, but no other record shows him connected to Chandler Township at that timeframe. Wiley seemed to live an elusive life. Although he was born, and died in Indiana, he did spend several years of his life in Chandler Township and was an interesting part of the community.
The photo below right was one of Wiley's houses on Springvale Road. Can anyone give more information about this house, and its relationship to Wiley Latshaw?

Mackie, Pearson and Wood Families
John Mackie's Great Grandson Keith Oldham made a pointilissm drawing from this photo above.
|
Nellie Mackie's husband Frank Pearson was the son of James & Esther Demaray Pearson. James had been the postmaster of Chandler Township in 1901. Frank had siblings Jennie (Judd), Sarah (Soule), Mark, and William.
|
William Pearson, born in 1860 in Canada, was a very prominent, and interesting person. He lived a great deal of his life in Chandler Township and the surrounding areas in Charlevoix County. William was a farmer, teacher, Sheriff of Charlevoix County, State Senator, large landowner, Treasurer of Chandler Township, Chandler Township Supervisor, owner of lumbering business in Boyne Falls, traveling salesman, President of the Northern Brick Company, President of the Boyne City Railroad, Charlevoix County Register of Deeds, Lake Louise Trustee, and a member of the Masons, the Odd Fellows, the Pythian fraternity, and the Knights of the Maccabees. One of William's transactions which still has major implication on the economy in 2014 was when William Pearson sold major acreage in Boyne Falls to Everett Kircher who developed the property into Boyne Country USA. This enterprise has employed many residents of the area over the years. The Biographical History of Michigan lauded William J. Pearson in a glowing multi-paged biography. The biography stated that "At the age of twenty-four Mr. Pearson contracted a matrimonial alliance with Miss Emily A. Barner [sic Barnes], of Boyne Falls, who departed this life just four months after the marriage ceremony was solemnized. " Emily had been struck with tuberculosis and was working to support herself, at the time that William married her out of compassion. He was able to send her to a home where she was able to have comfort and peace before she died just three months later. William's next wife Nellie Cameron also was afflicted with tuberculosis and eventually died from it, but after having four children, including twin boys, with one of the twins dying early on. William and Nellie's children were: Sara "Tate" (Joseph Honey "J.H." Stephenson), Alex, James (died young), and Nina May (Delma Lee "Del" Auble). William then married a third time to Flossie and had one daughter Helen who married William Herbert "Herb" Seals, Jr.

In 1909 Howard and Marion Mackie Wood rented "The Old Harrington Place" discussed above, while their home up the road was being built. Howard and Marion built the existing farm house on Magee Road... moved back to Chicago in June 1918... then moved back to the farm in 1929. Mr. Hines who lived near where the Gallop Farm was, built Howard and Marion's farm house.

Jerry Wood, photo article below, was the son of Howard and Marion Mackie Wood. Jerry enjoyed flying at an early age, much to his mother's worry. Jerry's love of flying resulted in him living in Coral Gables Florida and being highly influential with Eastern Airlines from their very beginnings, when in 1941 Miami International Airport had a 2000 foot gravel runway. Jerry was called in by the government to help set up THE BERLINE AIRLIFT when the BERLIN BLOCKADE cut off supply lines. Jerry's early days as a barnstormer proved invaluable for for this operation. Jerry was elected to the OX5 Aviation Hall of Fame with the likes of Charles Lindbergh and Amelia Earhart. Jerry was also honored by being included in the San Diego Air & Space Museum in Balboa Park San Diego CA.
Jerry and his wife Marj were buried in the Gallop Cemetery... his final resting place beside his parents Howard and Marion Wood.

Family of James Milford
I had looked through my Grandma Howardine Wood Bush Plumb's scrapbooks many times. It was not, however, until I had begun constructing this Chandler Township Charlevoix County Michigan Memories website, and had come across the James "Jim" Milford pioneer's name, that I made any connection with this obituary that my grandma had saved in her scrapbook. Now, I am assuming that Grandma had probably gone to school in Chandler Township, probably at the Mackie School, with Ethel Milford's daughter Helen Milford Jackson. Upon doing some research I learned that Helen was born in 1901 the same year that Grandma was born. I do not find the Milford Family with Helen in Chandler Township until the 1920 census record. So, Helen Milford may have been living in Chandler Township anywhere between 1910, and 1920. A photo of Jim Milford and his dog in Springvale beside the railroad tracks is on this website. James and Ethel Milford were buried in the Greenwood Cemetery Emmet County Petoskey MI. Thelma Milford married Jay McMullen who worked for, and retired from, the Petoskey MI post office after 41 years. ~ Karla Howard Buckmaster

June 08, 2012
Dorothy Jean Peters went to be with the Lord on Wednesday, June 6, 2012, at Grandvue Medical Care Facility surrounded by family and friends who loved her.
Dorothy was born on Sept. 19, 1931, in Jackson, Mich. along with her twin sister, Doris. She was the fifth child of six born to Anna and Harrison Leverett. Her brothers and sisters include Bill, Leo, Floyd, Doris and Donna who all have preceded her in death.
Dorothy went to grade school and middle school in a small one room community school house with children of all ages. She graduated from Vandercook High School in 1950. While in high school she loved to play basketball and was recruited to play for her high school.
Dorothy met her husband, Ralph, at a church conference in Independence, Mo., in April 1954. They were married on Sept. 11, 1954, in Boyne City at the Community of Christ Church. Together they made their first home in Chandler Hills of Boyne Falls for about one year before moving to Walloon Lake where Pam, the first of six children was born. Shortly after, the family moved to Lansing where they had Randy and George. Before long the family moved back to Boyne City where Henry, Janet and Neil were born. Janet, 6, and Neil, 5, died tragically as a result of drowning while the family was at a Little League baseball game in 1968. Raising her children and being a wife was the most important mission in her life. She raised her family by using the simple values of "always love one another and be there for one another if you can." Ralph departed this life on Oct. 26, 1982.
Her other interests include watching Tiger baseball (her favorite), Lions football and Pistons basketball. She was a highly involved member in her church. Dorothy, over the years did a lot of babysitting for area families and volunteer work for her church and the community including Grandvue.
She is survived by her children, Pamela Herron, Randy Peters and his wife Mary, George Peters and his wife Barb and Henry Peters and his wife Boudicia. Dorothy also has 18 grandchildren and 29 great-grandchildren.
The family wishes to extend their sincere appreciation to all of the special people at Grandvue who took such wonderful care of Dorothy, she really loved all of you.
Visitation will take place 5-8 p.m. on Sunday, June 10, at Stackus Funeral Home in Boyne City and on Monday from 10 a.m. until the time of service.
The funeral service will be 11 a.m. on Monday, June 11, at the funeral home, led by Lee Ecker. The burial will follow at the Evangeline Township Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, please send memorials to the Community of Christ Church in Boyne City or to Grandvue Medical Care Facility to be used in the activities department.
Family and friends wishing to share a thought or memory of Dorothy are encouraged to do so online at www.stonefuneralhomeinc.com.

Huron Petoskey
Huron Petoskey's 1968 obituary is the only record found so far stating a connection between him and Chandler Township. The 3 July 1968 obituary named him as "Homer." Two days later, however, in the same Petoskey News Review newspaper, he was correctly named as Huron. His wife's 6 November 1982 obituary listed him as Huron. Huron's father Enos Petoskey's obituary noted that Huron was an only child. Enos who died in 1917 had been a son of Chief Petoskey. Mrs. Petoskey is noted as being in her Chandler home in the 1968 article below left. If anyone has additional documentation, from a census record, perhaps, to connect Homer Petoskey to Chandler Township, please contact the webmaster.

"Rachael Potts was born in Stark county Ohio, April 20, 1837, and passed from earth life to spirit life Dec. 28, 1906. In 1852 she moved with her parents to Camden, Hillsdale County, Mich., and was married to Andrew J. Potts in 1854; in the year 1884 they moved to Charlevoix county." Rachel purchased 160 acres of land south of Springvale in 1889, where they built their home and lived the rest of their lives. Rachel and Andrew's son Charles had a house next to the Andrew Potts property. Their son David bought 80 acres from the 160 acre Pearson property, just north of the center of Springvale, and built his house there. The Potts Family was noted as having a street named after them on the Village of Springvale 1901 Plat.

Mabel Potts, third daughter of Charles and Ella Rice Potts, married George Thebolt (a brother of her aunts, Emma Thebolt Potts and Lena Thebolt Rice) who was about 20 years older than she. George and Mabel moved to Wyoming, and then on to California where they raised two children. Mabel's two sisters, Emma Adaline and Luvinna both had died as teenagers. Mabel was the youngest of the three.
Sometime after 1910, Charles and Ella moved from Michigan. Family lore indicates that they worked on a ranch somewhere in the Dakotas. When their daughter, Mable, was sixteen years old, she married her uncle, Emma's brother George Thebolt, who was 22 years older than she. George and Mable had a son, George, born in 1917 in Montana and soon moved to Casper, Wyoming, where George found work as a laborer in an oil refinery.
Charles and Ella Potts went to meet their new grandson in Wyoming. However, Charles never reached the Thebolt family; he died in Montana on March 27, 1918. Ella stayed on in Fergus, Montana, marrying John Sage the following summer. Her second grandchild, Thelma, was born in Casper, Wyoming, at the end of 1919. By 1930, the George Thebolt family had moved to Concord, California. When Ella's 2nd husband died a few years later, Ella also moved to California. Ella Rice Potts Sage died in Alameda, California, on June 4, 1947. George Thebolt, Sr., died on April 17, 1956, in Concord, Contra Costa, California, and Mable died there on December 9, 1994. (It is not known if John Sage was related to the Sage family from Chandler); later Ella Rice Potts Sage moved to California.

The three photos below are from the Linda Potts Balderson collection. Perhaps someone will recognize any of the four unknown men in the photos left and center, or maybe know WHY the men in the center photo would have on hats looking like Easter bonnets as Linda Balderson suggested? This story told by Linda Potts Balderson relates to the three photos above regarding Harry Potts, the older son of David and Emma Thebolt Potts: "Harry Potts and Jennie Burton Potts had 2 children, Roy Jean Potts, born May 1914, but only lived for 12 hours. Then they had Beatrice Estella in May 1915. Harry died 27 October 1918 [COD ~ Pulmonary Tuberculosis] and was buried in the Greenwood Cemetery in Petoskey MI. Harry's death was followed shortly, by Jennie who died Feb 1919. Beatrice, parentless, lived with her grandparents, Emma and David Potts, from the age of 3 to the age of 9. Beatrice then went to live with Ambrose and Bernice Cooney Franks in Hillsdale, MI, who adopted her on January 13, 1926. Here is the family connection: Rachel Cooney Potts (wife of Andrew J. She married Ambrose Franks and they lived in Hillsdale. Beatrice died in Ann Arbor, MI, in July of 1936. She was 22 years old. Beatrice is buried in Greenwood Cemetery Petoskey MI with her birth parents, Harry and Jennie Potts."
Linda Potts Balderson has in her collection, the three above photos which include her grandfather Floyd Wellington Potts who married Joanna Althina Smith. Photo above left: Floyd Potts in Springvale when he was the age of 15, so about 1909/10. Also notice the reference to Floyd Potts in the article below, when he would have been about 15. Floyd married Joanna Mae Smith 27 January 1915 when she was 16 and Floyd was 21. They were holding their first child Leon Evert Potts. Floyd graduated from Wolverine High School, the Graves Business College in Petoskey, and Ferris Institute. Photo above right: Floyd and Joanna and 5 of their 6 children stood in front of a building with a Laundry sign. The missing child was Dana, the youngest, born in 1931. The children from oldest to youngest were: Leon, Irving, Marion, Betty, Floyd, and Dana.
The book titled Resort Township Remembers described the family of Johanna (Joanna) Smith Potts because her family had lived in the northeast section of Resort Township Emmet County MI. On page 111 it stated:
"... Their family (Mr. and Mrs. George Smith's) consisted of four boys--Conn, Carson, Neal and Rubert and three girls Johanna, Jessie, and Genevieve.
Johanna married Floyd Potts. Jessie developed polio in her teens and spent the remainder of her life in a wheelchair. Despite her handicap, she had a cheerful disposition and supported herself by mending zippers."

"Tupper Jack"
Albert Howard's grandson Al Howard has the originals of the above two photos of Tupper Jack. Al's father Vernard Howard had written on the back that each photo was taken in the 1940's. Vernard also had handwritten on the back of one of the photos: "Tupper Jack and his team of oxen. Tupper drove these animals to the Straits [Straits of Mackinac MI] and went across on the ferry to visit - had to promise to clean up any mess before they'd let the oxen on the ferry. Sometime in the 40's."
So far, Tupper Jack's true name has not been revealed, although on the 1940 US Census Record was listed a Delbert Tupper born about 1873 in Michigan, listed as the Head of the Household, with no other household members. This Delbert was listed as living next door to Albert Howard which matches up with stories that have been handed down, so probably Delbert Tupper was the true name of "Tupper Jack". Albert Howard (Granddad), Albert's son Karl "Cub" (Dad), and Cub's son Rodger Howard made a visit one day to Tupper Jack's house according to Rodger. Rodger remembers that Granddad, Dad, and Rodger visited Tupper Jack because Tupper Jack often came around to visit Albert Howard, driving his oxen, and then stayed for a meal, as Albert was a good cook. Albert made everyone feel welcome... 'come on in and stay awhile'. Anyway, Tupper Jack had not come around for a few days, and Albert began to worry about him. So Rodger, Dad, and Granddad just went around the corner from Albert's home on Magee Road, on to Townpump Road, down by the spring, and knocked on Tupper Jack's door. No one answered so they peeked in, and there lay Tupper Jack, in his bed, so sick he could not move or hardly talk, with a chicken perched on each post of the foot board of the bed. Rodger tells that Tupper Jack finally recovered from whatever had made him so sick, but Rodger always has remembered the day they checked on Tupper Jack.
Another neighbor Fred Glazier, about the same age as Rodger Howard who told the above story, also has memories of Tupper Jack's subsequent property owner. Fred wrote that Louis Wolscheid, had 40 acres on top of the hill at the end of Town Pump Road. Louie's dad Nick lived up there. Nick Wolscheid ran a "pick-your-own" berry patch up there. Fred thinks the Wolscheid Family came from Grand Rapids. At one point he rented out boats at the fishing site by Thumb Lake. An old shack on the property was redone to make it livable, from when Tupper Jack had lived there. Nick died in 1961 in Grand Rapids and Louie used it on weekends until he retired. Then he moved up there full time, and built a second cabin. Louie sold the place to Warren Loranger in about 1970. It is now owned by Dorothy O'Brien.
